Canterbury Cancels Thursday Racing in Midst of Heat Spell

Text of Canterbury Park Press Release:

Shakopee, Minn.  —  Due to extreme temperatures and a heat index exceeding 110 degrees forecast for tomorrow evening for the Twin Cities, Canterbury Park officials announced today that live racing will be canceled for Thursday, July 21.
“Forecasts call for a dangerously high heat index of more than 110 degrees. After consulting with Chief State Veterinarian Dr. Lynn Hovda, we have determined it is best to be proactive and cancel tomorrow’s races,” Canterbury Park President Randy Sampson said. “The health and safety of both our equine and human athletes is always our primary concern. We also do not want to inconvenience our guests and race fans with a last minute decision.”
Racing resumes Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a 10-race program.
Canterbury officials intend to add a make-up race day on Thursday, Sept. 1 pending approval from the Minnesota Racing Commission.
