Minn Bred 2-Year Old Takes Assiniboia Stakes

Pecos, a 2-year old filly bred in Minnesota by Charles Smith and Terry Propps, captured the $25,000 Graduation Stakes at Assiniboia Downs Saturday night.

The only filly in the eight horse field, Pecos broke sharply to the outside of Ozark Daredevil. Jockey Rohan Singh rated the filly just off the leader’s hindquarters and started to move on him through the turn in the six furling race.  Pecos ($3.50) seized the lead as the field started straightening for home, the pair putting six lengths between them and the rest of the field, and drew off to win by 3 1/4 lengths as the odds on favorite.  Ozark Daredevil was safely second while maiden Actions Speak got up for third.

The win makes Pecos three for three on her young career.  She broke her maiden at Canterbury in June and followed that up with a gate to wire win in the $25,000 Assiniboia Debutante Stakes before taking care of the boys last night.

Her next start should come on September 6 on Minnesota Festival of Champions Day in the $80,000 Northern Lights Debutante.
