Wings Locked Up Dominates Dash; Fillies Race for Hope Sunday

Wings Locked Up with Orlando Mojica breezing through the Honor the Hero

SHAKOPEE, MN – Wings Locked Up, morning line and betting favorite, left little doubt who was in command in the $50,000 Honor the Hero stakes at Canterbury Park Saturday.  The five furlong turf dash  had to be postponed from Memorial Day because of weather and for a while it looked as if Saturday wasn’t going to be any better.  When the horses came onto the track for the race, however, the rain had stopped, the clouds broke and certified the trust that track management had in leaving the stake on the turf.

There was not much drama in the race as Orlando Mojica had Wings Locked Up out of the gate swiftly and the outcome from then was never in doubt.

“This is a nice horse,” Mojica said.  “He did it nice and easy.”

The postponement may have helped Wings Locked Up.  Trainer Clinton Stuart said the horse came down with some intestinal cramping while waiting during the weather delay last week.

Wings Locked Up in the paddock

“He kept wanting to lay down in the paddock and, at first, I was afraid he might be colicking.” said Stuart.  “But it turned out it was probably some gas.  He was fine for the ride home (Prairie Meadows) and I galloped him during the week and he was perfect.  We shipped back up yesterday and ran well today.”

Wings Locked Up covered the 5 furlongs in :56.09, the fourth fastest running in the race’s history.

“I think we’ll be back next for the Dark Star,” said Stuart.  The $50,000 Dark Star Cup, 6.5 furlongs over the dirt, will be run during the Northern Stars Racing Festival on June 23.  Wings Locked Up is the defending champion.
