Olmstead Sweeps Cash Caravan, NCQHRA Futurity Saturday

Dickey Bob with Denny Velazquez takes the Cash Caravan Stakes

SHAKOPEE, MN – Trainer Jason Olmstead swept the Quarter Horse stakes Saturday at Canterbury Park.  Dickey Bob edged brother Pyc Jess Bite Mydust again in the $35,000 Cash Caravan Stakes and Jess Doin Time came back from her Mystic Lake Quarter Horse Futurity victory to take the $50,000 North Central Quarter Horse Racing Association Futurity.

In the Cash Caravan, full brothers Dickey Bob and Pyc Jess Bite Mydust were the top two choices in the wagering and Dickey Bob got the jump on his brother and led to the wire but, once again, Pyc Jess Bite Mydust was charging at him late, only to fall short at the wire.

“If he would just break, Jess would win some of these” said the breeder/owner of both brothers, Bruce Lunderborg.

Judy Lunderborg added, “Pyc is way faster, he just doesn’t break well.  We thought he might turn the tables here because the race was longer, but Dickey Bob held him off.”

Though Jess’ trials did not dampen the enthusiasm for Dickey Bob’s victory.

“It’s really just amazing,” said Judy.  “Two full brothers finishing first and second again.  It’s been very exciting.”

Dickey Bob covered the 400 yards in 20.03 and returned $5.00.  Pyc Jess Bitemydust paid $2.40 and Rey D Arranque paid $3.40 for third.

There was little doubt in the NCQURA Futurity as Mystic Lake Quarter Horse Futurity champ Jess Doin Time staked herself to a 1/2 length lead and maintained that margin for the 350 yards, stopping the clock at 17.67 and paid $4.40 as the favorite.

Trainer Jason Olmstead, who secured his fourth quarter horse training title at Canterbury, praised his crew for their success this season.

“We didn’t have enough help early on,” said Olmstead.  “Some of these folks stayed through the hard times and now we have a good crew, winning races and having fun.”

Apollitical Mogul ($5.60) was second while Zoes Sassy Miracle ($2.60) was third.

Tom Pouliot, owner and breeder of Jess Doin Time, said that the filly will point to Festival Day at Canterbury before shifting tack to Prairie Meadows and aiming for the Valley Junction, providing she holds up well to the demands of the season.
